Science of Food Security at the World Economic Forum in China

ETH Zurich participated at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2015, addressing the topic of Food Security.

The Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2015, the World Economic Forum’s global meeting on innovation, science, and technology, explored innovative responses to global challenges. Members of the ETH Zurich's World Food System Center presented their ideas on how big data analytics enable us to better respond to food security challenges. During the WEF IdeasLab, Peter Edwards, Director of the Singapore-ETH Centre, spoke about the effects of rapid urbanization on the food system. Also participating in the IdeasLab were: Prof. Hong Yang, EAWAG; Prof. Shana Sturla and Prof. Laura Nystr?m, Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich. They spoke about: managing water scarcity with better data, tracking food safety, and innovative strategies to reduce food waste.
"Food waste generates 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases annually, and that makes food wastage the third top emitter after the USA and China", said Laura Nystr?m, talking about the global damaging effects of food waste.
